As a painter and pioneer of net.art, this piece represents the physical painting branch of my work. During the rise of the early web, I began repurposing popular vector clip art into senseless, Dadaist compositions as a response to the sudden explosion of digital imagery. I was struck by how online ...

My recent works are contemporary talismans that weave together primal symbolism, contemporary art, and technology. On wooden panels, solid color fields meet signs and symbols—ranging from Nordic runes and Egyptian hieroglyphs to personal sigils. At the center are mysterious creatures to which I intuitively assign distinct characters and powers. Their core outlines were shaped by early artificial intelligence in the style of cave paintings, and I am still fascinated by the aesthetic errors and unexpected glitches it produced. Glossy lacquer contrasts with matte acrylic paint, creating graphically clean, vibrant images that bridge an ancient world of symbols with today’s technological reality.
I have been exploring technological shifts and their impact on humanity for over thirty years. As part of the international net.art community, we used the internet as a studio, material, tool, gallery, and frequently as the subject of our work. We questioned how the web would reshape society and the individual. From this era emerged the Tangible net.art body of work, where I "froze" my interactive web projects into static computer graphics. Later, I continued creating digital graphics to investigate the ongoing consequences of technological change.
Eventually, I built a custom robot to become a cyborg-artist—an artist with a technological extension of the physical body. Together, we created several series on wood: for some, the robot drew with markers; for others, it carved directly into the panels.
Over time, I began to feel that technology can alienate us from something primal—from a direct connection to nature and to ourselves. After decades of technological experimentation, I returned to the paintbrush, though I didn't abandon the robot immediately. We created side by side on the same canvas: me with a brush, the robot with mechanical precision. Vibrant colors and the friction between organic gestures and machine accuracy gave these works a dynamic, sometimes chaotic energy.
When I realized the machine had become a crutch, I let it go. Painting by hand means I cannot delegate responsibility for a single stroke to anything else. Every movement can alter or collapse the entire composition. It was precisely in this risk that I rediscovered the meaning of creating solely with my own body.
Artificial intelligence will change the world far faster and more profoundly than the internet ever did.
