About The Artwork

Adam is an 1880-1881 statue of Adam by Auguste Rodin, first exhibited at the Paris Salon that year entitled The Creation of Man. The work was first cast in 1910 and bronze casts of it are now in the Art Institute of Chicago,[2] the Musee Rodin and the Metropolitan Museum of Art among others. The Creation of Adam was a forbidden work for post-impressionist art. The subject was outdated and people believed that it had outgrown the biblical religious life, especially after the socialist fashion. However, Rodin brought up the subject again, emphasizing the enormous artistic burden of a birth. Classical art returned with Rodin's Adam, albeit temporarily, in a post-impressionist and expressionist world, which did not need birth, but only creation. Today we know that these two go together.
