About The Artwork

With a record number of five acquisitions of existing originals within the United States and Canada during the course of the year 2020, and a major commissioned by a private client completed and installed in Dayton, Ohio on August 7, 2020, Chitra Ramanathan's colorful, textural paintings with joy and happiness as her abstract concept, the artist's work has deemed them suitable for display in all public venues including hotels, educational institutions, botanical gardens or courthouses and are perfect for all ages. There has been no looking back for contemporary visual artist Chitra Ramanathan since 1995 when the artist’s career debuted with solo and group exhibitions of her paintings at different venues including Agora Gallery on Broadway, New York City. Noticed by art critics for her concept and originality, her name and art were featured in different art publications including Manhattan Arts Magazine. Ramanathan's unique, intuitive style of painting is distinct with her treatment of fresh, bright colors executed with rapid brush strokes. Often combined with varied intricately interwoven textural materials interwoven into the paint rather than mere stand-alone collages, they visually create the aura of extending beyond their two-dimensional surfaces. Many of her paintings are created in expansive scale, or as multi-paneled works. With the abstract concept of happiness and expression of joy as the theme of her ongoing body of work her work has attracted displays in both private ad public venues including courthouses, hotels and prominent solo and group exhibitions. An award-winning child artist growing up in India, Ramanathan earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting with honors in 1993 and M.B.A in 1997 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her numerous originals have been acquired by private and business clients, auctions, and site-specific public art commissions including an installation of a pair of custom-created paintings at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas in 2004 invited by MGM Resorts International. Recent private commissions include a recently completed commission request by a private client in Dayton area, Ohio to create pair of paintings identically measuring 7 feet high by 3.4 feet wide that was completed in July 2020. In 2016, a three-paneled painting was commissioned by the CEO of Biaggis chain of restaurants in Bloomington, Illinois, and a 5 feet wide X 3 feet high commissioned piece for a private client in Boston, MA in 2018. Publications of Chitra Ramanathan's biography and images have been featured in Askart.com, Luxury Real Estate Magazine, the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Who’s Who in America, International Contemporary Artists, Vol 1., the Indianapolis Business Journal, Indianapolis Monthly Home Magazine, Miami Art Scene Magazine in 2018, and the Art Guide Mag's Artist Directory in 2020. In recognition of her experience, Ramanathan was invited as Visiting Artist by the Head of the Royal Academy of Arts, London UK in 2005. for a visual presentation and student critiques at the Royal Academy of Arts Schools. This work is inspired by a photograph by the artist capturing the colors of flowers and water in Claude Monet's garden in Giverny, France. I would like viewers to enjoy and relish the feeling of flowers and water, and the feeling of joy in viewers who view and/or own this piece. The medium of acrylic paint dries fast in keeping with the spontaneous, rapid brushstrokes, and helps to bind the combined permanent textural materials into the paint. The glossy paints and textures both aid in capturing the effects of shimmering water and sunshine on the flora.

Artist's Statement In general, my series of paintings are inspired by sensory emotions such as joy/happiness, music, films, fantasy, dreams, the colors of seasons, and the colorful festivals and costumes characteristic of my native India, gardens and continually evolving seasons. I generally choose acrylic paint as main medium, often accompanied by permanent texture materials such oriental papers, gold leaf, sand, and fibers to create mixed media. Commissions welcome. Overall, my ongoing thematic body of paintings compare the mental emotion of happiness as a “visual entity” and defining happiness as “fleeting and ephemeral” to short-lived garden blooms and continually evolving seasons. The colorfulness and myriad collaged materials that I often employ intend to evoke joy in my viewers, and the illusion of the imagery extending beyond the confines of their two-dimensional surfaces is exciting! My concept alludes to trying phases followed by positive and happy periods in human life as with continually changing and evolving seasons in nature. Some of my commissions in recent years by private and business clients include a three-paneled painting for the CEO of Biaggis Restaurants in Bloomington, Illinois in 2016, a 5 feet X 3 feet mixed media work created for a client's residence in Boston, MA in 2017, and a pair of acrylic paintings commissioned in sizes of 7 feet high and 3.4 feet wide installed in the home of the President of Ulliman Schutte Construction in Miamisburg, Ohio in 2020. I have enjoyed a continuing successful career. From 1999 until 2003, several of my originals had initially begun to be acquired through an online marketing company. Since that period, numerous originals have continued to be acquired by business clients, and commissioned as public art by organizations and educational institutions. In 2004, my art entered the public realm. MGM Resorts International commissioned me to create a pair of paintings that were based on two of my earlier originals. The larger, signed acrylic and mixed media paintings measured 6 feet high and four feet across were installed in the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas during that year. The famed location and commission earned praise and wide recognition for my work.
