Painting: Oil, Charcoal on Canvas, Wood.
Painting from the series Spatial history, was painted early in 2017, whilst continuing to explore my inner sense of place and space ( and whilst realising that my work, without intention, displayed echos of the Chinese landscapes of the Song and Yuan dynasty which become symbolic shorthand and emblems of the Artist's character and spirit) In the series Spatial history, I revisit the memory of places and journeys that are often defined by emotion. Tensions between past and present, joy and saudade, presence and absence continue to inhabit my visual language, expressed through a set of coded references and metaphors which I explore through the balance of chance and control during the painting process.I use pallet knife, brush, cloth and sponge, building up layers and washing away in a process that becomes as important to remove as to add, a kind of reverberation of relationship with the canvas of addition and subtraction, push and pull.
I intend to create something that is ambiguous, chimerical, organic and elemental.
Signed and dated on the side of the canvas the painting is ready to hang. The canvas is deep edged 4 cm which shows small signs of the working process to the canvas side.
