About The Artwork

In my work over the years, splitting a canvas essentially in half comprises a good amount of my paintings. When I do so I consider them some form of landscape, typically devoid of trees or structures, but not always. Incursion 2 is the second take on this red and white landscape (hence the name), but there are also remnants of structures on the horizon and in the foreground. These shapes whether prominent or veiled, represent man's footprint on our earth, with color representing the natural world. I'm drawn to the rawness of the acrylic application on this one. This style is reflected in much of my work the past number of years. My artwork is not always pretty, but my goal is to consider the order of nature over the chaos of man and their relationship to one another.

"Predictably unpredictable" describes my process. Using mostly brayers to apply and manipulate acrylics, the outcome is often somewhat unexpected, and the discovery factor is high. I have an idea of what will occur when I put paint to canvas, but not an exact one. My process is one of discovery and exploration, continually experimenting with color, texture and underpainting, with a healthy dose of “what happens if”. In addition to brayers, I use rags, fingers, palette knives, squirt bottles and the occasional brush, graphite and marker. The primary focus with most of my work is the affect humans have on the natural world. In the bulk of my paintings, the natural world is represented by color. Man's footprint appears as black lines, marks and shapes. The viewer determines if our imprint is a positive or negative one.
