The painting explores the subtle tension between civilisation and the primal instincts that lie beneath it. The elegant architecture represents human order, culture, and control, while the gorilla embodies something far older and more instinctive. Rather than disrupting the scene, however, the creat...

Contemporary Surrealist Painter.
Martin Wojnowski paints the thoughts polite society prefers to ignore.
A British artist based in Dubai, Martin creates contemporary surrealist paintings that combine familiar environments, unexpected encounters and a distinctly dry sense of humour. His work explores human behaviour, social conventions, personal ambitions and the small absurdities of modern life.
His artistic journey began in London in the early 1990s, producing watercolour illustrations of classical interiors for leading designers. Even then, he found himself more interested in what might happen inside those beautifully composed spaces than in the spaces themselves. An unexpected object, an unlikely visitor or a subtle disruption could transform an otherwise conventional scene into an entirely different story.
That instinct has since developed into a distinctive artistic language.
Drawing on his extensive background in art, architecture and interior design, Martin constructs carefully composed environments in which reality is interrupted by something out of place. A delivery rider enters a grand dining room. An elderly woman surveys her neighbourhood through binoculars, a rifle resting against the wall. A shipping container occupies an elegant interior. The scenes are recognisable, but their logic is delightfully questionable.
Beneath the humour lies an interest in the contradictions of contemporary society: our relationships, expectations, insecurities, ambitions and the curious ways we define happiness and success. His paintings rarely offer answers. Instead, they invite viewers to invent their own explanations.
For Martin, art should do more than decorate a wall. It should provoke curiosity, spark conversation and occasionally make us uncomfortable enough to reconsider what we take for granted. Beauty may attract the eye, but it is the story that makes us stay.
After all, a beautiful room is no guarantee of a beautiful life.
