About The Artwork

This award winning painting is one of my favorites of all my watercolors. I hate showing it because I don't like parting with it....However, when shown in public , it has attracted a lot of attention: a few years ago, it won the Trophy for Best Watercolor at the annual Ottawa Art Association Juried Show, it was selected for the prestigious Selections juried show in Canada's capital and in December 2014, it was the Best of Show at the annual Ottawa School of Art Fund Raiser Juried Show. This is my third of Venetian mascaroni or carved stone heads over archways of palazzi. Most of these Venetian mascaroni are about three or four hundred years old! I find them fascinating! I called it The Protector in part because of the word "custodiat", that appears carved in the archway....May ( the Lord or Master of the house) guard...... It is an original watercolour painted from my own reference photo. It's approximately 19" X 16"on top quality Arches watercolour paper. This is quite a special painting! And maybe I am ready to let it go...maybe:-) I will ship it professionally matted with a white mat ( approx. 3 inches wide), but unframed and in a cardboard box.

When I paint, I am happy and feel whole. I paint the beauty of light and the joy I find in life! My work wants to be a sharing of a moment of serenity and balance. It is an expression and reconciliation of my inner dichotomy: I love creativity while needing structure; I love fluidity and softness of colors while craving realist details and lines. Consequently, for example, my watercolour demonstrate realism with colors much enhanced by my imagination. My paintings of sculptures and carvings depict the dancing light on crumbling brickwork, or pastel colors on the stone carvings. In my acrylic or watercolour “Leaves Series”, mysterious but serene light filters through the stems and leaves, water shimmers here and there as the leaves float on the pond. My oil paintings dance with vibrant colors on top of well-structured florals. My first art love was watercolour and my watercolour paintings have won many awards and I have completed major corporate commissions in watercolour. However, I am an explorer at heart and love to try new surfaces, new styles and techniques. I go from watercolour to acrylic paints to mixed media to realistic oils. In the last few years I have become obsessed with detailed oil florals especially of peonies and sunflowers.
