Santa Barbara New Spain Architecture
When I moved to Santa Barbara I was
in awe by its unity in architecture. I
researched the city’s history and found
the men and women that made Santa
Barbara what is today. The list includes
Bernhard Hoffman, George Washington
Smith, Pearl Chase and Jeff Shelton
amongst others. I was inspired by them
to paint these images.
Santa Barbara’s widespread unity in the
Spanish Colonial Revival architecture
came out of a time of rebuilding from a
disaster —the 1925 earthquake.
Destruction shows itself as an opportunity
to restore, change, unify and adapt.
