Emil Fais (born 1997) is an Indonesian contemporary artist known for his bold approach to pressing issues, particularly those concerning the environment and pollution. Since beginning his art practice in 2015, Fais has focused not only on aesthetics but also on the work's function as a medium for social criticism and reflection. ​Fais honed his artistic skills and framework during his undergraduate studies at Surabaya State University. This academic background equipped him with both technical discipline and a drive to transcend the boundaries of conventional art. ​Central to Emil Fais's practice lies material experimentation. He actively seeks out and utilizes materials often considered residue, waste, or byproducts of pollution, transforming them into provocative visual elements. In the process, he challenges common perceptions of what constitutes 'art materials' and 'waste.' His works often feature unexpected textures, derived from the manipulation of industrial pigments, recycled plastic, or collected pollutant deposits, transforming them into visual artifacts of the ongoing ecological crisis. Themes of ecosystem damage and the visual impact of industrial pollution are his primary canvases. Through each layer of his work, Fais invites audiences to confront the realities of a degraded environment. Fais's exhibition track record has taken him across geographical boundaries. His participation in numerous national and international art exhibitions since 2015 has affirmed his relevance as a prominent voice in contemporary art, marrying social responsibility with material innovation. Fais continues to develop, expanding the dialogue on how art can serve as a catalyst for environmental awareness and change.
