Alfred Stoll (Alex Alfred Sol Gluhov, b. 1993, Temirtau, Kazakhstan) is a Nuremberg-based digital artist and media designer. Since 2020, Stoll has worked across photography, digital painting, generative art and media installation. The practice addresses the body, identity and contemporary aesthetics through metamodernism, using augmented reality, drawing, collage and moving image to reframe familiar visual languages. In 2023, Stoll published the Metamodern Art Manifesto.
Stoll’s work has been presented in Germany, Greece and the US, including Kunstlerhaus, Nuremberg; Haus des Deutschen Ostens, Munich; kultur.lokal.fuerth, Fuerth (including the 2026 solo exhibition “Transgression durch Hoffnung,” a black-and-white photography series); Domatio Art Space, Athens; Haze Gallery, Berlin; and Chimaera Gallery, Philadelphia.
PRACTICE
Working across photography, digital painting, generative art, moving image and spatial installation, my practice investigates how bodies, identities and desires are re-authored once images pass between physical and digital space. Photographic and moving-image fragments, projections, screens and augmented-reality elements function as unstable interfaces — at once documents, surfaces and sites of encounter, never settling into a single, fixed reading.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work operates from metamodernism — a mercurial condition between and beyond irony and sincerity, oscillating between subjective and objective, past and present, virtual and real. Rather than resolving these tensions, I hold them in “Schwingung”: a continuous vibration between poles that refuses fixed truth, fixed reason, fixed tragedy or comedy. This oscillation gives rise to what I call, following the metamodern manifesto I published in 2023, a “new romanticism” — one in which the artist’s own authenticity, rather than any external doctrine, becomes the work’s structural foundation.
