About The Artwork

This piece is part of a series entitled 12,000 BCE, inspired by the ancient cave paintings found all over the globe and dating back several thousands years. In a shifting world riddled by doubt and anxiety, these impressive works of art on solid rock walls literally ground us, connect us in a timeless manner, and remind us that humanity and art cannot be separated. The canvas is first primed with gesso mixed with sand and ash, before applying charcoal and acrylic paint.

Sarah comes from a small village, Eze, wedged between Monaco and Nice, on the French Riviera. The view from her childhood house was of the mediterranean sea, surrounded by the Alpes Maritimes mountain range. She obtained a MD in Belgium, then studied in the USA towards a PhD. She cared for patients, taught at medical schools, and had a reserach lab, working in Belgium, the US, and the Republic of the Congo. She retired from academia and went to live in California. There she met Cathe Grawin, an artist and teacher in Solana Beach. Cathe inspired her to begin painting. Why not? No art background was required. There was only freedom to apply paint and enjoy it, to bring back to life the colors of her past. She keeps herself in check by remembering Cathe's favorite and liberating quotes "Not every piece is a masterpiece", and "Thank God for the gesso".
