About The Artwork

The painting is inspired by rolling hills and folds in the landscape. It is an imagined abstract landscape with central light that I hope viewers will see as positivity. The painting's jewel like colours are an inspiration and give the viewers bright hopefulness and confidence, while they anticipate what might be ahead. In my paintings I like to use layers of transparent colours, overlaid on a coloured ground. This allows light and colour to glow through. I use the marks, scratches and dots of oil pastel to keep the eye moving around the canvas, to highlight areas and contrast against under colours. The subject of over space and rolling hills appeals to me as I look out from my studio and see hills and the sea line in the distance.

Brisbane, (Australia) born and raised, Narelle Callen is a visual artist and designer who has always loved art, drawing and painting. Raised in an artistic, creative family, Narelle spent much of her childhood and teenage years in northern New South Wales at her family beach house, photographing and capturing details of the beach and surrounds, that holiday feeling, sense of freedom and adventure. She continued this through her design study and still does this, interpreting these details in her art work. After studying Industrial Design at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Narelle worked for a number of years in both architectural and interior design. She went on to complete a Masters of Project Management with The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. After 17 years of getting quite absorbed and rather lost in large infrastructure projects, and finding herself more and more distracted with the driving need to create something meaningful and artistic herself, she returned to an artistic, creative career and is currently building her business, The Callen Collective, into a thriving arts business. Her artwork hangs in private collections in Australia and internationally. She is based on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, south east of Melbourne in Australia. www.callencollective.com.au
