"Rock Pool" is a lyrical tribute to childhood holidays spent along the wild coastline of the Tsitsikamma National Park in South Africa. Named from the Khoisan word meaning “place of abundant water,” Tsitsikamma’s rugged rocks and restless seas form the emotional backbone of this work. As a child, l...

Contact us.Candace Sutton is a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist born and raised in South Africa, where the landscape, climate, and natural rhythms continue to shape her work. At the core of her practice is a fascination with pattern, texture, and colour as they appear in nature, explored both visually and emotionally. Making art is a way for her to slow down, reflect, and connect.
Macramé introduces a strong element of mindfulness into her practice. The rhythmic repetition of knotting fosters calm and presence, while variations in cord and structure create rich textures and patterns. It is a tactile medium, inviting engagement through touch as much as sight.
Gel plate printing opens a space for experimentation and play. Drawn to its layering, mark-making, and unpredictability, she creates richly patterned papers using colour, texture, and found objects. These are cut and collaged into dynamic animal illustrations and abstract works that balance bold, unconventional colour palettes with organic forms.
More recently, fluid art has influenced her work. The movement of paint across the canvas—uncontrolled, organic, and alive—reflects life’s own ebb and flow. Each piece becomes a meditation on letting go, trusting the process, and embracing the unexpected.
Across all mediums—macramé, gel printing, collage, and fluid art—a consistent thread runs through her work: the interplay of pattern, texture, and colour found in nature, and the sense of calm and mindfulness that arises from observing these interactions. Art is both a creative and therapeutic practice, offering space for intuition, surrender, and emotional reflection.
Each artwork begins with a feeling or moment of contemplation—such as a Highveld storm, twilight stillness, or rain on dry earth—and evolves intuitively. Every piece is unique, created to invite presence, connection, and quiet joy.
