View In My Room
What seems to be a family of large rocks is gathered around their black & white TV in a 50s-style retro living room, watching Elvis rocking out. So what led me to create this painting? Being a long-time fan of Magritte, my thoughts turned to some of the giant boulders he has painted. I wanted to create something with boulders in it but didn't want them floating in air or just sitting in a room as those seemed too similar to what the Belgian master had done before. I decided to sleep on it and that apparently did the trick as I decided to create a rock family. Initially, this was going to be a bunch of rocks gathered around the dining room table. For some reason, I thought this should take place in a retro 50s setting. That's when I hit upon the idea of the Rock Family, gathered around the TV. I started with a garish pink rug and that kind of determined my color palette. From there, I thought the wall needed a wallpaper pattern. So I created one but it's badly out of sync. Oh, well, I thought - maybe the circle pattern was hand-painted instead of being a wallpaper pattern. From there, I decided the Rock Family needed some wall art - so I chose three Magritte boulder related paintings (The Anniversary, The Invisible World and The Imaginary Battle of the Argonne) along with one of my own (Lightness of Being). Originally, there was going to be a mirror on the side wall but I opted instead to have a wall sconce, shining down on - (what else?) - a bowl of rocks. There are some books in the bookcase, held down by a rock paperweight. This is one of the oddest paintings I've ever done - but it may soon have company as there might just be a Rock Family series coming up as I have three other scenarios waiting to be explored.

I am a modern day, self-taught surrealist. I paint ideas. My goal is to depict the impossible or at least, the highly improbable. When people view my paintings, it's readily apparent what is going on, just not always easily understandable as to why. My paintings will make you think and hopefully, bring a smile to your face.
