From my series 'Peeling Layers'. This series is the result of a process of observation and memory that began externally and moved inward. I examine the deconstruction and reconstruction of my identity as someone who has left her home behind to replace it with a new one. The work offsets images from the past with those of the present, as a metaphor for the evolution of one's identity. It examines the seam between the broken and the renewed, and exposes the divided identity that is unique to immigrants. I use the image of the window as a transitional element between the old and the new, and as a passage between inside and outside. Reflective as well as transparent, the window bridges between past and present, and enables observation from a distance. The paintings represent the passing of time, longing, and disappearing and reemerging traces of memories, all elements which are involved in the process of migration.

Irit Epstein studied fine arts for five years at the Academy of Art (HDK) in Berlin, Germany, receiving a Masters of Fine Arts. Additionally, she completed a masters degree in Art Therapy at New York University. Irit relocated to Toronto from Israel in 2010. Since that time she has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries in the Toronto area including the Arts and Letters club of Toronto, Gallery 1313, Articsok, Bezpala-Brown, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, Arta, The Papermill, Doris McCarthy Gallery, the Miles Nadal JCC, and others. She was the jury award winner for the February, 2012 "LastIn" exhibition at Bezpala-Brown Gallery. Irit also was the Juror's Choice in the "Back to Basics" exhibition at Doris McCarthy Gallery. In 2016, she exhibited in a group exhibition at Agora Gallery in New York City. Prior to her move to Canada, Irit's work appeared in six solo exhibitions in Israel. She participated in the group traveling exhibition "Contenedores De Espiritu" in Mexico. Additionally, her work was exhibited at the Biennale Internazionale Dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy, as well as numerous group exhibitions in Israel and Germany. Her work appears in private collections in Israel, Germany, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, USA, and Canada. Irit's paintings are a personal diary and a reflection of a continuing journey within herself, carrying on a dialogue with the environment and responding through symbolic imagery. This visual exploration reflects the constant interaction between universal elements and personal symbols, allowing a reflective look at their complicated co-existence. Diving into her internal landscapes, Irit retrieves images and combines them with external impressions to create a space, an experience, and an atmosphere to arouse the curiosity and imagination of the viewer.
