About The Artwork

My work is inspired by the movement of an autumn forest and the contemplativeness it evokes. A seemingly eternal space that fluctuates and changes with each season yet still remains unknown to us. My work is intended to create space for contemplation rather than fill it and inspired by "Hiraeth'. The technical aspect of my work is a combination of old and new technologies, a slow and purposeful process that combines medium format photography cameras with digital printing. I create high-resolution scans from large negatives that are printed using a Gilcée method onto an archival cotton rag paper. This is 1 of 30 fine art prints that come with a signed and numbered certificate of authentication.

Gawain Barnard is a Welsh Photographic artist whose work merges a documentary style with poetic sensibilities to create a constructed visual narrative. Whether through long-term projects that adopt the familiar scope of landscape and portrait to construct a semi-fictionalised chronicle or via the individual image that is created as a lyrical portrait, his work has an individual yet strong aesthetic. In 2021 & 2022 his work was selected for the Royal Academy Summer exhibition, in 2013 he was the winner of the 2013 Aneurin Morgan Thomas award for best artwork from Wales as part of the National Art Open, and was a featured artist of the 2014 Eisteddfod. He is the recipient of Arts Council awards and his work has been shown nationally and internationally and is part of numerous private collections. Gawain's work is sold through Nelly Duff Gallery, London.
