About The Artwork

This piece is part of a series of up close photographs of vintage currency from around the world. I use cropping and scale to reveal intriguing compositions hidden in de-monetized bills that I have collected during my travels. I use a macro lens and a high resolution digital camera to allow for extreme enlargement. The composition is cropped in tightly on a section of the note that is only a few inches then it is blown up to be 40” x 60”. It is Giclée printed on high texture Hahnemuhle German Etching paper with a white border. I recommend float mounting with a deckled edge in a frame that is 47.5” x 67.5”. It will ship rolled in a shipping tube. From an early age I developed a fascination with money from other countries. Now when I travel, I inspect the bills closely and have developed an appreciation for the beautiful and intricate design that goes overlooked by most. It’s easy to miss the beauty in the design of money from your own culture because it is so familiar, but when presented with foreign bank notes they don’t hold the same meaning. One is slightly removed from their value and I find this detachment allows me to to see the bills with fresh eyes, not just as currency, but as a piece of design. The concept of money and its actual value is becoming more ephemeral as we move further into electronic transactions, and a cashless society. This transition from analog to digital breeds a new fascination with the past in much the same way as the resurgence in collecting vinyl records. As we transition into a world in which paper currency ceases to exist this body of work takes on a new significance.

The Macro Dinero series by Geoff Weiser showcases demonetized bank notes from different countries throughout different time periods. Re-contextualizing the money through cropping and scaling allows the viewer to appreciate the design without recognizing the original source. The prints are given a new life separate from their identity as currency. Geoff graduated college with a degree in graphic design and had a successful career as an art director at many of the top advertising agencies in Philadelphia where his work earned him numerous awards over the next ten years. In 2001 he and his wife co-founded the home fragrance brand Skeem Design where he was the creative director. His products and package designs were featured in many prominent publications including Elle Decor, The New York Times, Vogue, GQ, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2021, after 20 years, they sold the business allowing him more time to focus on his artwork.
