About The Artwork

River Flow Series Drawings of the patterns of the flow made at the source of a tributary and further downstream in central Todmorden. Charcoal on heavy hand made watercolour paper. The drawing is many layered, to express the layers of water, and the land, and time passing as the rivers flow. About this work This drawing is made after studying the source of the river, at the highest point on the moors where a flow was visible. Following a period of studying the River, and becoming interested in the way that waterways merge together, I made a series of paintings related to the idea of ‘confluence’ as a guiding principle for the work. This river has always been interesting to me because it is at the confluence of three valleys, which give many options for going places and seeing water. A confluence occurs when two or more flowing bodies of water join together to form a single channel. Confluences occur where a tributary joins a larger river, where two rivers join to create a third or, where two separated channels of a river, having formed an island, re-join downstream.

My painting has always been bound up with examination of the land , and in particular, the ephemeral, those forces and presences that cannot be seen but which change and shape the land. I work with the power of drawing and abstraction alongside the behaviour of waters in my ongoing ‘Flow Project’ to bring a new dimension to the vital work of Slow the Flow. My process involves intuition and immediacy in relation to specific environments. I collect, examine and engage with on-site data as a primary source for work which is based in knowledge of movement, the flow, geology, entropy, landscape and place both celebrating and raising awareness of the unique and fragile nature of our environment. The work has taken me to a range of habitats to examine them in new ways and consider how each small part of our upland and lowland environment can potentially be part of a solution to the problems of flooding in the valley. Working in a range of media including oil paint, watercolour, drawing sometimes on a large scale, I have have studied and visited the River Calder and its catchment in the valley bottom, in higher upland areas and at its tributary sources high on the moors above Todmorden. Currently finishing an artists residency with Slow the flow- natural flood management action group. I have been a practising and lecturing artist all my adult life, having graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a Master of Art (Fine Art) and BA Honours Degree in Fine Art. Highlights of my career have included being selected for the Sunday Times Watercolor competition (2020), and working on live installations at the Whitworth Gallery and Victoria Baths Manchester. (2008 and 2011) Artists Residency with Slow the Flow - part of my work is chronicled in the blog for the project – The Flow Project on Wordpress. https://theflowprojectannefox.wordpress.com/
