About The Artwork

'Compilation IV' is a handwoven wall hanging which uses a cassette tape in the weft of the woven material. The cassette tape is a compilation of the music from my teenage years. Using apparently worthless or waste materials, I give them a new life, give them value and worth, and tell a little of their story, making them beautiful and desirable once more. It is important that the material speaks to me; I can then give it depth and character on the loom using various weaving patterns, bringing out its hidden story. This particular pattern is a honeycomb weave repeating over 20 picks. It comes to life when it's cut free from the loom. The threads move and flow, and have their own energy. The flexible cassette tape is combined with a warp made from stiff paper, linen, cotton and synthetic yarns. I hope that the viewer will look into the depth, be captivated by the lustre and life of this material. It hangs on a wooden baton, made from FSC wood.

Veronica is a textile artist specialising in weave. With a passion for reusing and recycling waste and a perceptive sense of colour and textural combination, Veronica uses materials such as newspaper, vintage maps and cassette tape to create wall-hangings and panels. These make tactile and beguiling, quietly powerful additions to any interior. With materiality as a starting point, Veronica gives value and meaning to the apparently worthless and waste materials. Depth and character are created in the weave using structural effects and floating threads. Reacting to the material and its provenance, Veronica exposes its essence through the subtle combination of texture, colour and pattern. "Weaving is a metaphor. Textiles are a metaphor. Their impermanence reflects the transient nature of remembered events, experiences and emotions."
