Tom Glendenning is an abstract artist and muralist based in Pontevedra, Spain whose works are exhibited internationally. He graduated from Kingston University, London in 2014 with an honours degree in graphic design that taught him the importance of creative problem solving and powerful ideas. Before working on large scale murals he began painting dynamic and textural abstract artworks on canvases inspired by abstract expressionists such as Willem de Kooning and Gerhard Richter. Colour and contrast are extremely important in Tom’s work, of which nature and abandoned urban landscapes provide a huge source of inspiration. He describes his artistic expression as being rooted in the contrasts of colour, mark-making, and texture, as well as controlled randomness. Specifically, he endeavours to create a "sense of place" within each of his compositions, often focusing on the relationship between urban and natural environments. Maps In his current project, Tom uses geographical map borders and contours to create an authentic fusion of urban and natural environments that bring landscapes to life as dynamic and colourful abstract compositions. Each colour area is defined in part by the artist's vision and in part by the intrinsic contours of the map, resulting in pieces that are unique to their location. Although not explicitly, each mural invites the viewer to read the map and have a deeper appreciation for the abstract artwork. In each of his compositions he strives to create a bold and detailed abstract tapestry of colour and texture that with each observation reveals new details that are recognisable to the observant viewer. Each piece transforms the environment it inhabits and invites individuals to see their city in a new way and feel a part of something greater.
