ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Rooftop Promises is a wall-hung sculpture that functions on two levels: on one hand it is an earthy study in materials, design, color and process, but it also is an abstraction of a cityscape (maybe Manhattan?) from above, aglow in the deep indigo tones of twilight. Each piece of wood was shaped, distressed, sandblasted and burnt, and once the pieces were affixed to the backing plate it was painted using Japan Color (a highly pigmented oil-based paint) and finished with a mix of tung oil and polyurethane.

I am a sculptor whose works have been exhibited in museums and art galleries throughout the United States. I was born in Detroit, Michigan USA and now work from my studio in Highland Park, Michigan (an enclave of Detroit.) My sculpture is almost entirely abstract. I began working predominantly in clay, and then steel, and more recently I often work in wood. My work is distinguished by my use of contrasting materials, textures, and the juxtaposition of the organic and the industrial. My sculpture is also informed by my work as a graphic designer, a field in which I have also worked steadily.
