Contact us.Erica Timothy (b. 1957) is a contemporary ceramic artist, based in Bath, UK. She has been making ceramic works since 1986. Her work is sculptural and organic and her influences include Magdalene Odundo, Gabriele Koch and Barbara Hepworth.
Erica specialises in hand-coiling with grogged clay; a traditional process which requires patience and skill, but allows for the creation of shapes and forms that would otherwise be impossible to achieve with a throwing wheel. This results in an enchanting body of work.
She is inspired by nature and the beautiful forms of flora and fauna. She is also inspired by the round bodied forms of West African calabash and low-baked pots seen on her travels to Sierra Leone.
As a qualified landscape architect, her knowledge of the natural world informs her artistic practice. This can be seen in recent sculptures inspired by the seed pods of British and West African plants alike. Early work often reference the animal world, with extravagantly curved horns reminiscent of those of antelopes. Sometimes, the forms are more abstract, such as the ‘Torus’ series, or the oversized pebbles, and they are always tactile.
Her works have been exhibited in London and Bath and have been acquired by several collectors including the late Doris Lockhardt-Saatchi.
