About The Artwork

Welcome” is the title of the photographic installation created by the artist Carlo Pecorelli with the sand of the island of Lampedusa. The sculpture depicted in the island cemetery of the migrant boats has a strong emotional impact. The work used in the photographic performance carried out by the sculptor Pecorelli has small dimensions but for the artist it contains a strong meaning connected with the otherness of peoples and inspired by the very current theme of the landings of immigrants on the southernmost coasts of Europe. The figure of the presence of the reversed child is the extraneousness to the context similar to an anthropomorphic debris abandoned at the mercy of the marine elements and surrounded by a disconcerting indifference that makes the work disappear which deliberately camouflages its material with sand being composed of the same substance. A work that makes the immigration between life and death on the southernmost Mediterranean island of Italy clash violently in a single photographic representation. “The child materialized from the sand in an almost instinctive way” comments Pecorelli “I felt imperceptibly guided in his composition which I desired to be wrapped in the same material as the beach of Lampedusa, the landing place for so many immigrants who reach it on boats guided by the hope of a better life but who often experience the tragedy of drowning. 13 October 2019 Lampedusa F. Macaluso
