A couple of crows would often land on the telegraph wires outside my window. I would watch them, playing, flying up and down, squawking and talking to each other, watching the shapes of their black wings fluttering as they lifted and landed and swooped and dived. Gillian Cooper is a multi-disciplinary artist from London, now living in Cornwall, whose work encompasses drawing, print and installation, Gillian's artwork excavates the intangible, what is hidden or often overlooked in the landscape. She is drawn to the everyday, found or domestic material, object or process, to natural history and natural phenomena. In her work she seeks to express a wonder at the capacity of ordinary things to act as poignant metaphors for deeply personal and collective experiences and emotions. When explored with her particularly stark, semi-figurative language of mark making, these subjects become subtle symbolic devices to point to the wider social and political issues of migration and wildlife extinction. Gillian's works are hand made, the most direct and tactile gestural expression. Even prints in a series contain slight variation, referencing difference, the hand-made gesture and that which is human.
