The Latin phrase “Ad Infinitum” means “to infinity” or “forevermore”. It is used to describe something that goes on without end or limit. The painting reflects the intricate dynamics of the mind, as per Freudian theory. The figure facing away is our conscious self, aloof and watchful. She faces a fantastical scene that reveals the hidden layers of the unconscious. The woman in blue dress that playing the mythical harp expresses our innate drives and urges (Id), free and passionate in a world beyond reason. The black cat, a symbol of mystery and fear, shows our repressed wishes or anxieties (repression) that haunt us from the dark. The endless ocean and the dreamy skies depict the vastness of our psyche, filled with unknown realms that sway between calmness and chaos; like our changing moods. This image portrays a perpetual dance between what is and what seems, what we know and what we feel; mirroring Freud’s idea of Ego balancing between social rules (Superego) and natural desires (Id).
