This Paris street scene uses a palette of almost entirely bright colors — yellow, orange, pink and lavender – to create a very graphic image. The bright red awnings and the trees help to balance the brighter tones, and there are subtle tricks of perspective in evidence. This is a good example of only putting in what is necessary, as most of the details in the apartment buildings are only suggested rather than precisely rendered. The surface of my works is textured, partly from the way in which I prepare the surface, and partly due to the style of painting, with thick paint applied with energy. This is deliberate, as I want to create works in which the "hand of the artist" is evident. Soft lighting is important when hanging, enhancing the color and energy, and minimizing the surface texture. The sides are painted brown, and it comes ready to hang.

I have been interested in art since childhood. Following art school, I have spent over 30 years as an advertising/graphic design professional. About 6 years ago I was able to begin painting again in earnest. My particular artistic journey began with an abiding interest in Fauvist landscape, especially those of Andre Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck. Bold color, expressive brushwork, and simplified drawing were also the hallmark of my work at that time. As other influences came to bear, including the German expressionists, the Blue Rider group, and individual artists such as Paul Serusier and Grace Hartigan, my work has been moving inexorably toward abstraction.
