About the Artist

Miljana Draskovic

Serbia

I am a professional visual artist born in 1959, based in Užice, Serbia. My career, spanning 36 years, is rooted in my status as an independent artist, a title I have held since 1999. I am a prominent member of the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia (ULUS) and the Association of Applied Arts Artists and Designers of Serbia (ULUPUDS).

To date, my professional journey is defined by 48 solo exhibitions and participation in over 450 group shows and symposia, complemented by two awards for painting at the Užice Regional Art Salon. I also serve as the host and organizer of the International Art Colony "Užice 2025," a project dedicated to fostering creative exchange.

I have been painting for as long as I can remember, and that might be since I was three years old, when I saw and recognized images of life (clouds, people, treetops, birds...) on the ceiling of my childhood home. Or perhaps they found me and recognized me, while I found artistry in them.

"I can only be a painter in life," were my words in early youth - a decision, and most of all, a calling of the soul. And so, I embarked on a journey that was hard but endlessly beautiful, exciting, and uncertain, without a doubt!

Moving to Istria, to the town of Poreč (now in Croatia), before the war in 1991, painting and selling artwork in the square in front of thousands of tourists from all over the world - this was my reality for a full seven years. During that time, I grew as a woman and a mother, giving birth to three children, which presented a serious life challenge. I truly lived life fearlessly, in its fullness, and continued to paint it - with boundless love and immense passion - all the way to today, driven by my deepest need.

At first, it was the life-giving flowers and vibrant still lifes, then sunlit landscapes, followed by my first series of paintings, the "White Album," with its inexhaustible motifs of sacred architecture and spiritual opulence.

I began to take an interest in the rich and boundless cultural and historical heritage of the Serbian people, which led to the creation of series such as "Hearth," "Kolo," "Revelation," and "The Story of the Distaff and the Rug."

Landscapes - whether local, urban, or discovered during numerous travels - have never ceased to inspire me. As a starting point, they serve only as initial motivation before I embrace and transform them into sun-drenched landscapes.

Light, light guides me...
