About The Artwork

I call it ‘Train’ firstly for the obvious reason that all of the pictures were taken on trains but also because it evokes the idea of the journey. I live in Barcelona and started taking regional trains up and down the beautiful Maresme coast north of the city. The trains were covered in graffiti and I found the marriage of the outside reality with the window and it’s new filters to be very beautiful. The project took me about 3 months, but took a twist half way through as I was told my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The pictures suddenly took on a whole new meaning for me and I started to view the graffiti as the illness, covering and overtaking life on the outside. Then Coronavirus came which only served to compound the feeling of illness or virus coming to suffocate. I hope these pictures can be viewed as positive because they are full of colour and hope and indeed death and illness are just a part of life. I believe we are entering a new stage of mankind’s journey, one which may bring a lot of pain but also a flowering, an opening up, a realisation that we are all in this together, on the same train……..my mother is making a great recovery, hopefully mankind’s will be the same. Printed on Fine Art Paper (Ilford Baryta 310) - 30 x 40 cm

I was born in Derry, but spent most of my childhood in Dublin. I was educated at Catholic University School in the centre of Dublin city. Afterwards I received a diploma in LIve Sound & Stage Production as I loved music and wanted to persue a career working at live concerts. I changed to graphic design a couple of years later and have been working in the field of photography and graphic design for over 25 years since. I started out as a desktop publisher for Graphic Reproductions in Dublin for 3 years before becoming the picture desk manager at Inpho Photography for a further 6 years. I left Dublin for Barcelona in 2003 and have worked as a freelance photo editor, location manager and photo retoucher for various photographers over the years. Throughout my time in Barcelona I have fluctuated between graphic design and photography. I have designed various websites. I love working with photography and text, flyers and posters being my passion. My most recent work has been as the graphic designer for MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya). I am a visualist, I love creating images, whether it be through the medium of photography or design.
