About The Artwork

I use materials that I find in plenitude around the studio; surgical masks, old book parts, and monoprints I sew all these into grids and print and sew and print... In Isabel Wilkerson’s book “Caste”, she references the census bureau which “announced its projection [in 2008] that by 2042, for the first time in American history, white would no longer be the majority...” The prospect is compelling and in anticipation, I created these sewn collages of skin tones loosely referencing city grids. I mixed more than seventy skin tone colors (inspired by the photographs of Angelica Dass in her ongoing project “Humanae.”) I learned how to generate each particular skin tone that tends to objectify the human, but in the studio, an equalization occurs that doesn’t exist in the world outside my studio. The mixing is an action that connects to the brain, so I can feel a cognitive and emotional shift. My hope is to continue to carry that feeling out of the studio.

Susan Smereka was born and raised outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and now has lived in Vermont, USA for over thirty years. Smereka graduated from Concordia University, Montreal with a BFA in 1994. Whether working at the etching press with ink and collage, writing and bookmaking, or video installation, Susan is interested in the concepts of disorganization and order around experiences of inner experiences and those of family relationships. How these, seemingly opposing energies reconciled, or not, continues to spurn her artistic process for 40-plus years. Smereka co-founded 'new new art studio' in 2020 with her partner Kevin Donegan. 'new new art studio', Burlington, Vermont, is a space for teaching, exhibitions, and the creation of fine art.
