Contact us.Brenden Spivey is a Columbus, Ohio-based contemporary abstract artist whose paintings explore memory, place, perception, and the emotional experience of the environments we move through. Working through layers of color, gesture, geometry, and atmosphere, Spivey creates compositions that balance structure with intuition and translate remembered experiences into a visual language of their own.
Drawing from travel, architecture, music, landscape, and design, his work reflects an ongoing interest in how places and moments remain with us after we leave them. Rather than depicting his sources literally, Spivey allows fragments of light, movement, color, and form to reappear through abstraction.
A self-taught artist, Spivey developed his practice through sustained experimentation and an intuitive engagement with materials. What began as a personal creative practice has evolved into a growing body of work exhibited through galleries, art fairs, and exhibitions nationally and internationally.
His work has been presented at Red Dot Miami, Art Expo New York, Intersect Palm Springs, and other exhibitions and fairs, and is held in private, corporate, and public collections, including the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Hilton, and Charles Penzone Salons. Spivey lives and works in Columbus, Ohio.
why I paint
I began painting as a way to navigate anxiety and depression. I discovered that art had an unexpected ability to quiet my mind. When I painted, it felt as though all the open browser tabs in my head went silent. The constant stream of thoughts gave way to something simpler: color, movement, and the canvas in front of me.
Painting gave me a way to be fully present. What began as a search for moments of calm gradually became something much larger, a visual language of my own.
Over time, painting became a way to explore memory, place, emotion, and the experiences that stay with us long after a moment has passed. I became less interested in reproducing what I saw and more interested in understanding what remained after I experienced it.
Today, the studio is still a place where the noise quiets. It is also where I explore, remember, question, and discover. That sense of presence and possibility remains at the heart of why I continue to paint.
