I started painting and drawing with my sisters to pass rainy days at the family cottage. Drawing and painting saw me through teenage-hood, after which I landed in Toronto’s art scene in the early 80s. Working in artist-run spaces to support myself, I mostly painted portraits of my contemporaries. A 1987 trip to Australia and Indonesia to learn about different ‘artviews’ took a year of wonderfully spent time and led to my volunteering to teach art in Sierra Leone, Africa in 1990. I liked teaching art and so returned to university to get a B.A. in Studio Arts and Bachelor of Education in Art from the University of British Columbia. In order to allow for more painting time, after many years teaching and painting in Vancouver, I moved to the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. One of my life goals is to help animals, and so I donate some paintings and prints to raise money for them.
