About The Artwork
What are rimmonim? They are the finials that are placed on the staves of Torah scrolls after the decorative jacket is placed over it and the breastplate is hung over the staves. Why are they called "rimmonim?" Rimmonim is Hebrew for pomegranates. A brief explanation. Before the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, there was a high priest who was arrayed in a jacket and robe. "A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe round about" dangled from the robe. In other words, the Torah scroll is dressed like the high priest. I saw this arrangement in Jerusalem. Oil pastels on handmade paper mounted on wood and framed flush with cedar.
