About The Artwork

British rock group Genesis commissioned me to produce a series of works inspired by their music and that was published as 'Genesis Lyrics' by Sidgwick & Jackson. I completed this particular painting while they were recording their album 'A Trick Of The Tail' and in a sort of reversal of the original commission it provided the lyrical inspiration for their song 'Entangled'! Part of the lyric reads “Sentenced to drift far away now. Sometimes entangled in your own dreams”. Today there's substantial historical interest in that period and its culture. The major representatives of the scene were undoubtedly the English band Genesis. They emerged from Charterhouse, producing major artists such as Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford and influenced a generation of musicians. Of all the era’s bands Genesis most encapsulated everything that was lyrically whimsical and musically progressive. Their strong visual show, their lyrics and music had a strong effect on me and from the moment I showed my work to them it was clear that my paintings and their music had particular affinities - a common ground of feeling, taste and inspiration. Genesis, known for their ethereal music, pioneered the use of visual theatrics in rock performances, creating a continuity of sound and vision, music, literature and art. This marriage of word and picture inspired my work on 'Genesis Lyrics'. It was a response from a young Brazilian artist to the mythology-driven English Public School rock music of the 70s. Rock music at its root shares with painting, sculpture and all visual arts the ability to reach vast numbers of people. Its persuasive power, like my images', rests on hints and suggestions that set the mind a-floating in a dream state. We both shared a love of irony and the bizarre, conjuring images that allow the melodies to flow freely and entice the imagination of the listener and viewer. Our shared influences were as eclectic as the English tradition of Romanticism, the Pre-Raphaelites, the dreams and nightmares of William Blake, the Magic Realism of South American writers Gabriel Garcia Marques and Paulo Coelho.

I'm a Brazilian artist working in Rio and London. My unique technique of glass fused on steel plate was baptised ‘Diaphanism’ by Salvador Dali and my work has been exhibited worldwide. It also features on record sleeves and in a book illustrating the lyrics of British rock band Genesis. I'm very proud to be one of only four Brazilians cited in noted critic Edward Lucie-Smith’s ‘Art Today’ from Phaidon – regarded as a bible amongst art collectors. I'm also known for my jewellery designs, mostly creating one-off sculptural pieces.
