About The Artwork
Collage of acid-free tissue paper painted in acrylic paint and mounted on the outside cover of a hardback book. The cover is from 'Redemption Songs', an old hymn book known among the local church congregation as 'The Redemption'. The collage has several biblical interpretations. It is based on three trees in an apple orchard, which adds a further layer of biblical reference. The book cover has been sealed with Golden Gac 100 and two coats of Golden soft gel medium. Acid-free card has been fixed to the back for stability. The tissue paper has been coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and the picture protected with a coat of Golden UV satin varnish. Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
