Shapes surround us from the microscopic to what is visible to the human eye. These recurring shapes are the basic building blocks of our world and Stewart Fletcher believes that they speak to us daily in a very intricate and subconscious way. Individuals have been found to consistently apply the same emotions to similar shapes and assigned emotions to these shapes based on their appearance and their dynamic forces. In producing these works of art, the artist also discovered that the interpretation of these shapes can also be conditioned through cultural learning and societal behaviors. We react in conditioned ways. Your first impression is most likely that these images are vulvas and how you are reacting right now to these shapes is a part of this conditioning that the artist is exploring. Disgust, embarrassment, shame, laughter, and dismissal are just some of the many conditioned behaviors we have learned. One constant in all cultures and peoples is the notion of beauty in the natural world, and these same shapes and similar ones reoccur in nature and our reaction to them will be different and more positive. The painting is done in oils and charcoal on a 2/8 inch thick Masonite board. It is signed and I provide a certificate of authenticity. Title: Red lips Size: 6 x 9 inches Medium: Oil on Masonite

Stewart Fletcher’s paintings, drawings and works on paper have been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions over the past forty years. His paintings, drawings and works on paper are part of several private international collections in over 20 countries and in 36 American States. Known for his fascination with the human body, Fletcher explores various concepts beyond the representational image. The great equalizer he believes is when one's clothing is removed. All identifiers and societal statuses disappear and the real person appears. Fletcher does not believe that his work is erotic, however some people do because of their social, religious and regional upbringing. He often uses humour and satire to convey his views on the world around him..
