ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The sphere suspended from the machine’s superstructure underwent the most changes as I worked on this image. I started out going for something that seemed to be born from the light of an old lighthouse, constructed of brass and optical glass. It was an interesting idea, but even as I worked out its details I realized it lacked the necessary visual and physical weight to play its role of creating balance for the machine. Next I experimented with spheres of rough and polished stone, and settled on one made of smooth gray granite. I considered the piece to be finished, but whenever I went to make prints I had new doubts about the sphere. Then I remembered a large spherical lamp made of small leaded panes of glass I’d seen mounted on a gatepost outside an old San Francisco mansion. Darkened with age it had the same mass as the granite sphere but with more interest and complexity, and so became the piece that had been missing from the image’s puzzle. Limited edition of 30 - signed and numbered on the print below the image and on an enclosed Certificate of Authenticity. Printed on Canson Platine Fibre Rag, an archival fine art paper. Image printed area: 12 x 18 inches. Total print size including white borders: 13 x 19 inches. It will be shipped rolled, securely inside a shipping tube.

After a decades-long career as a commercial photographer I’ve turned my hand to producing more personal imagery. In my work I strive to evoke emotional and psychological truths by creating enigmatic, dream-like scenes steeped in symbolism. They depict impossibilities, paradoxes, and incongruities, but all rendered with precise, seamless realism. I’m inspired by the Surrealists, as well as by Renaissance art. Ideas for my images are sparked in a number of different ways, and each evolves as I weave them together from the raw materials of my photos and my imagination. Experimenting with different combinations of image elements until they take on a life of their own, I then begin the exacting detail work of making the impossible seem believable Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, I have lived for many years with my beautiful and inspiring wife on a steep hill in San Francisco, near our children and grandchildren.
