About The Artwork

Inspired by canto XII of Homer's ODYSSEA, which tells the story of the torment between Odysseus (Ulysses in Roman) and the Mermaids. Odysseus is a sailor who sets out on a voyage. An individual (masculine and virile) who goes to a destination and an end. And on his route he crosses paths with a group of Mermaids (temptress and feminine). Fighting against the Mermaids is equivalent to fighting against sensuality and temptations. Ulysses being seduced and tempted, is distracted and entertained, meanwhile he is postponing his goal and forgetting his purpose. The Mermaids cast a spell on all sailors who approach them. Whoever approaches his ship without knowing it and listens to the voice of the Mermaids, maddened in unreason, without brains, will have a hard time getting back on course. The Mermaids stimulate the primal instincts. Their main weapon is music and songs. The primary instincts, defended by Nietzsche, become more powerful than all rationalization processes. Therefore, the individual (archetypal hero) who wishes to remain rational, fights against these Mermaids. He does not succeed, he fails, he asks his assistants to put earplugs in his ears. He renounces the earplugs, and asks to be tied to a ship's mast. Even when Ulysses resists and the Mermaids fail to get him, he falls into madness, which is also the absence of reason. The paralyzing, maddening effect, in which the rational brain loses and becomes blocked. The Dionysian instinct seeks to take over the will. Emotions and feelings seek to impose themselves.
