ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Along the French coast, a few miles west of Dieppe, lies the small town of Varengeville-Sur-Mer, which boasts connections with the architect Edwin Lutyens and the painters Georges Braque and Claude Monet. The photographer Adrian Ensor is the latest artist to fall under the spell of Varengeville, producing atmospheric studies of rocks fallen from the vertical cliffs to the shore below If Henry Moore had happened on this particular beach, he might have been inspired by the sight of great slabs of chalk, eroded by the sea into monumental shapes half buried in the sand. Ensor’s dramatic prints add another dimension to semi-abstract forms that could resemble either a petrified cello, or a female torso lying prone, in the eyes and imagination of the beholder. Ensor’s photographs reflect the passing of centuries, during which the years of coastal erosion have created a series of still lives, waiting patiently to be transformed into graphic works of art. Traditional hand print on silver gelatin paper by Adrian Ensor.
